America’s Top 10 Best Coffee Shops

Excited to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with your family? I know I am! Did you know that Thanksgiving is the most traveled holiday? If you’re lucky enough to be visiting out of state family, make sure to check out this list of American’s Top 10 Best Coffee Shops and see if you can try out the marvelous cup of coffee these places offer. US Today’s article wouldn’t want you to miss out on the greatest coffee shops!

  1. Ultimo Coffee, PhiladelphiaThis shop takes the number one spot because it not only has the best cup of coffee, but also because the workers behind the counter are fabulous. They have all the fancy drinks, niche coffee roasts, unique sandwiches, but what makes it the absolute best is the attitude. Not only do people want their own cup of jo, but they want to have a good experience ordering it!
  2. Gimme! Coffee, New YorkThe godfather of craft coffee. Again, it’s all about the baristas! They are always juggling a million things from information, flavor notes, side work and trips downstairs to refill ingredients, they always treat their customers like they love them!
  3. Barista, Portland, Oregon

Located in America’s coffee capital you better bet this shop makes the list! What it does particularly well is showcase the best roasters of the Northwest in a “multi-roasted” model with a rotating list of roasts that range from hyper-local roasters to Stumptown.

  4. Courier Coffee Roasters, Portland, Oregon

Paved the way for Barista and other Portalnd area coffee shops as one of the most independent “low-fi” coffee shops around. Known for its hand-roasted, small-batch coffees. Originally started as a bike-delivery roasting company. That’s right, they deliever your coffee to you, by bike! They even pour your coffee into Mason jars (which are totally in right now in case you didn’t know). It’s the freshest cup of coffee you’ll get!

  5. Café Grumpy, New York City

New Yorkers know it as the coffee shop to go to. What sets it apart from the sea of coffee shops in New York is its own roasted coffee. It is mostly loved by coffee lovers for its dedication to maintaining a true coffeehouse vibe at its four New York City locations. It’s one of the few shops without internet! Instead you get a relaxed atmosphere with real conversation!

  6. Lamill Coffee Boutique, Los Angeles

Lamill doesn’t have the comfy, cozy vibe you’d expect to find in a coffee shop; which is why it is called a “boutique.” It’s a more modern and chic take on coffee drinking. Lamill allows you to pick your extraction (syrup) AND your coffee bean from a long list of espresso drinks.

  7. Stumptown, Portland, Manhattan & New York

Some people love it, others hate it because they think it’s becoming too corporate. It’s the Starbucks of Portland and for those who think it’s becoming much too like Starbucks and not as unique anymore still seem to flock back!

  8. Ritual Coffee Roasters, San Francisco

Known for their single-origin espresso, sourced from Central America, South America and Africa. It’s just coffee, pure and simple.

  9. Joe the Art of Coffee, New York and Philadelphia

Everyone knows Joe for their exceptional lattes, cappuccinos and espresso, they serve the best that you’ll find in New York City. The owners are constantly recognized for their roasts. They do everything to bridge the gap between Dunkin’ Donuts fans to the high-end customer.

  10. Intelligentsia, San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago

One of the fastest growing coffee chains in the nation. Dedicated to teaching the public exactly how they roast their direct-trade beans and serve their espresso drinks. Intelligentsia barista training program is one of the hardest to graduate from.

Hopefully you all will have a chance to try out a couple of these shops sometime in your life! Have a great Thanksgiving break everyone, enjoy your coffee but make sure you leave room for some pumpkin pie! 🙂

Pumpkin Spice Latte Reviews

The fall, as always, is a wonderful time of the year.  It is rapidly coming to an end. The end of fall also means the end of pumpkin spice coffees and lattes. I am going to review a couple of seasonal pumpkin beverages I tried this fall and rate them based on deliciousness and cost, because I’m just a broke college kid.  I will be reviewing both McDonalds and Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

McDonalds Pumpkin Spice Latte

I had the 12oz McCafe Pumpkin Spice Latte, and it costed me $2.39, a fair price. I let it cool for about 2 minutes then I had to try it. Sitting and smelling it before I drank any made me ready for what was next. It tasted like a pumpkin and a bag of sugar met at McDonalds and jumped in to my coffee and decided to take a swim.  It was super sweet and tasted like pumpkin almost in abundance. It also contained 270 calories so it was clear that it was very artificial flavors meeting in a cappuccino-like brew.  I will say after a couple of sips it goes down like water, I personally find it very easy to drink. Overall 5.5/10

Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte

I also, went out and tried the pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. Its price was $3.30 for a 12oz, a little expensive for 12 ounces, but I decided I had to pay to play, at least once. At Starbucks, I got to choose between what milk they made it out of, as pumpkin spice lattes are made with steamed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, or so the barista informed me.  I also could choose to get whipped cream or not. I chose “Yes, please” and away he went making my latte after I paid, of course.  I let cool for a half a minute or so, the temptation to try the whipped cream and a sip was unbearable.  The explosion of flavor was tremendous, unlike McDonalds this tasted a hint more of coffee flavors and a hint less of sugar panic.  They were otherwise pretty comparable with my coffee containing 300 calories, but without the whipped cream it would have been 240 so a little less fatty. Overall 6.75/10

I advise you to get out and try either one though, because soon fall will be over and so will the pumpkin spice and winter will bring peppermint season full force.
